Sticklers for "traditional" sushi beware. Nigirizushi (hand-formed sushi) may have started as a street snack in 19th-century Tokyo, but making it with the bluefin tuna so prized today is a relatively new invention. In fact, the tradition of using its red fatty "maguro" and "chutoro" cuts came only after the first Canadian bluefin were flown to Tsukiji Market in 1972, writes Sasha Issenberg, author of "The Sushi Economy." The worldwide taste for modern sushi (and waning tuna stocks) owes its existence as much to modern freezers and global infrastructure as it does Japan's culinary culture.
Floundering stock markets reeling in the wake of the U.S. housing-loan collapse are a less fortunate aspect of global connectivity. After the Federal Reserve cut interest rates last month, Bloomberg reported that the net balance of investors planning to hold more Japanese stocks than standard asset-allocation models plunged from 22 to 7 percent. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average and the Topix index are the eighth- and ninth-worst performers out of 89 global stock benchmarks.

With the autumnal equinox (Sept. 23), it is said, the heat subsides with "higan." This term, also used for the vernal equinox, has Buddhist origins and refers to "the other side of the river of death." Hence the tradition of visiting grave sites these times of the year to pray for the souls of family members who have crossed over. For more and more of Japan's departed, however, death may be the only chance to finally get some rest.
Last year, 1,757 applications for worker compensation due to karoshi, or death from overwork, were filed by Japanese workers or their surviving family members - up from just over 500 in 1995, reports Asia Times Online. Only 560 were approved, 66 for suicide or attempted suicide, and 355 for ailments such as stroke and heart disease. Most claims for psychological problems, including suicides, concerned men in their 30s. Those recognized as being work related were up 61.4 percent over 2005.
